Our Alumni Overview

From the pioneering 12th grade graduating seniors of 1976 to most recent academic years, our alumni continue to lead, strive, excel and shine! Space aeronautical experts, myriad teachers, professors, teachers, mentors across all levels of education, entrepreneurs, scores of physicians, nurses, ministers and professionals in many spheres across the globe once called the St. Croix Seventh-day Adventist School home. We’re proud of our pasts students and will feature some of their inspirational life journeys right here! Come check it out!

Dr. Annetta Alexander, the oldest of three siblings born to Blaise and Dorcas Alexander on St. Croix USVI, attended the St. Croix Seventh-day Adventist school from the 4th to the 12th grade. She graduated Salutatorian of the class of 1990 and completed her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Columbia Union College (now known as Washington Adventist University). Upon graduating from college, Dr. Alexander returned home and worked at the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital laboratory. With the desire to further her education, Dr. Alexander went on to complete her Master of Public Health from Virginia Commonwealth University. With an additional urge to further her education, Dr. Alexander obtained her medical degree from the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. She later completed a combined residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics from East Carolina University in North Carolina. In her spare time, Dr. Alexander enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband and family, spending time outdoors, reading, volunteering and mentoring. She has been involved in medical missions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Ghana. She is fluent in Spanish and French Creole. In an effort to give back to her community, Dr. Alexander moved back to St. Croix in 2018 and is currently employed as a staff physician at Frederiksted Health Care, Inc., where she has served as acting Chief Medical Officer and Laboratory Director. Dr. Alexander currently serves as a USCIS designated civil surgeon, HIV specialist, Internist and Pediatrician. “I love educating and empowering my patients and I see myself as a partner in their health care. I especially enjoy building relationships with patients and their families. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve my community.” She splits her time between her birth home, St. Croix and her adopted home in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Alexander says, “I am grateful for the prayers of my mother, the number of people who encouraged me along the way and the foundation I received at the St. Croix Seventh-day Adventist School. I am elated that the words written across the top of my 7th grade classroom, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve” still motivates me along my journey”. Dr. Alexander hopes that she can inspire many more alumni to return home and become valuable members of the St. Croix community.

I am Erna Josiah-Davis, but just Erna is fine. I will never forget the uniforms. I’m sure I’m not alone in that. I must admit that I was not a fan of the tie I had to wear but wear it I did without complaint. I remember those years with the most detail of any school that I have attended before or since. That’s the power, influence, and scope of the St. Croix SDA School on my life and memories. I arrived in the middle of our 9th grade school year and I left cherishing the laughing, rambunctious group of friends that I still communicate with to this day (Thank the Lord for Facebook). I also left this formative institution with an enormous respect for the teachers, principals and administration who never quit, never got discouraged and never acted as if their job wasn’t of utmost importance, because it was and still is. I am who I am because of God’s everlasting grace; I am a Nurse Practitioner, business owner and entrepreneur, teacher, mentor and coach and that’s just the tip of my iceberg. I wear many hats as I take care and support others and in turn I am blessed abundantly. It may have been over 30 years ago but the impact is still rippling in every day. So be a ripple in the pond of your life. Always leave a mark, always disturb the status quo just like Jesus did; and always, always commit every day to know your Creator and be more of what He intends for you to be.

John was born and raised in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Ever since he was eight years old, he dreamed of joining the navy. Before becoming a Seventh-day Adventist, Chaplain Logan was born into the United Methodist Church. He gave his heart to Jesus at a Nazarene Church and was baptized a Baptist at 12. As a professed Baptist, he was invited to a tent revival sponsored by the SDA Churches in St. Croix. Within two months of attending, he and his family were convinced about the Advent message and were baptized into the faith. At age 16, he felt the call to ministry and set his sights on becoming a bilingual pastor and Navy Chaplain. His ministerial journey began right after graduating with the class of 1988. He received a B.A. in Theology from the Antillean Adventist University in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, in 1992. He began his pastoral ministry with the North Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, assigned to the islands of St. Croix and St. Maarten. While attending graduate school in Michigan, he was commissioned to the rank of Ensign in the Naval Reserves, Chaplain Candidate Program Officer in 1997. John graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1998 from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, and in 2000 received a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan with a clinical emphasis in Children and Youth in Marriage and Family. He worked in Detroit and Wayne County, as an outpatient mental health therapist and as a psychotherapist in the city of Southfield, Michigan. This was in addition to his duties as a youth pastor with the Southfield Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He came on active duty with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He reported onboard the USS Belleau Wood (LHA3), homeported in San Diego, CA, six days after the 9/11 attacks on Sept. 17, 2001. He completed a Western Pacific Cruise deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002. In 2004, he reported to 3D Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, and was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 16. In 2005, Chaplain Logan was ordained by the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. In 2006, he deployed to Al Asad, Iraq, with Marine Aircraft Group-16 Headquarters in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return from Iraq, he received orders to Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., 8th & I, where he served as Command Chaplain from 2007 to 2010. Chaplain Logan also served as the Command Chaplain for Naval Submarine Support Center and Submarine Squadron Six, Norfolk, Virginia, from 2010 to 2013. John graduated from the U.S. Naval War College with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, concentrating in the Western Hemisphere, Latin America. In 2014, he graduated from Boston University with a Master of Sacred Theology with an emphasis in Ethics as part of the Navy’s Funded Graduate Program. His follow-on tour was to 2D Marine Division as the Headquarters Battalion Chaplain and later as the Regimental Chaplain to the 6th Marine Regiment. He deployed to Moron, Spain, as part of the Special Purpose-Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Crisis Response Africa with the “Fightin’ Sixth’s” Command Element in 2015. Chaplain Logan earned the distinction as a Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer in October 2016. In November 2016, he reported onboard the USS George H.W. Bush CVN-77 as the command chaplain for the ship’s Command Religious Ministries Department and Carrier Strike Group 2. He deployed in January 2017 with the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. In September 2018, he graduated from the Professional Naval Chaplaincy Advanced Leadership Course. In October 2018, he reported to the U.S. Naval Academy as the Deputy Command Chaplain and Senior Protestant Leader. In September 2020, John was promoted to the rank of Captain. He is the first Seventh-day Adventist Navy Chaplain from St. Croix and is currently assigned to Marine Corps Installations Pacific in Okinawa, Japan. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, 2nd award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, 3rd award, and the Navy Achievement Medal. John is married to the former Leticia Landefort of St. Martin, French Antilles. They are blessed with two college-age young adults; Paulita and Paul. John has a passion for sharing God’s love with all and leading people to a relationship with Jesus Christ. He credits his accomplishments to committing his life to the Lord in high school.

Evril H. Powell, MS, LSW, CPM, #5 of Joseph and Ynette Tyson’s 7 children who all attended and graduated from the St. Croix Seventh Day Adventist School. She was born on St. Croix and attended the St. Croix Seventh-day Adventist school from the 1st to the 12th grade. Thankful to her parents commitment to Christian Education, Evril attest that it was the foundation that she needed to become the person that she is! She graduated with the Elite Class of 1985 and completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services with a Specialty in Juvenile Justice from Alabama State University in historical, Montgomery, Alabama. Upon graduating from college, Evril decided to return home to seek employment because she wanted to work in a community that she loved and cared about with the aspiration to be able to help and make a difference in the lives of our youths. She began her career as a Licensed Social Worker with the Department of Human Services in 1991 with Children and Family Services in Foster Care/Protective Unit and Juvenile Prevention/Delinquency. After a few months she realized her true calling as a Social Worker was working with at risks youths and their family, thus requested to be the permanent Social Worker at the Youth Rehabilitation Center which is the only Juvenile Detention Facility in the territory. In September of 2009 she decided to return to college to obtain a Masters Degree. She successfully completed a Masters Degree in Human Services with a specialty in Counseling Studies from Capella University in 2011. While working on her Masters Degree her career kicked off, She was given the position as the Director of Treatment and Programs at the Youth Rehabilitation Center a position that she held for five years before being named the Interim Superintendent of the facility in 2011 and officially appointed in 2012 by then, Governor John P. DeJong as the Superintend. In 2013 she enrolled in the first Certified Public Manager (CPM) course at the University of the Virgin Islands and completed said program in August 2014. In March of 2017, former Governor Kenneth Mapp appointed her as Assistant Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services where she served until April of 2019. In her capacity as Assistant Commissioner she had territorial oversight for the Division of Juvenile Justice, Child Care and Regulatory Services, Division of Financial Programs, Medical Assistant Program, Psychological Services and the Youth Rehabilitation Center. Following career of 28 years with the Department of Human Services she worked briefly with the Department of Education Diagnostic Center with the Division of Special Education as a School Social Worker. In January 2020, Evril became employed with the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and served as the Patient Relations Specialist with oversight of the Patient Advocate Department. After actively serving the Virgin Islands community as a Public Servant for 30 years and 5 months, Evril decided to retire in February of 2022. “I am eternally grateful for all the experiences I have gained throughout my career as a public servant, each experience good or indifferent, definitely contribute to my professional growth.” She continuously expresses love and gratitude to God, her family especially her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews who are her greatest and most loyal supporters along with some colleagues that have become friends who are irreplaceable! Although retired she is still dedicated to serve and continues to serve as a Per Diem Medical Social Worker in our community with Continuum Care, Inc., working with Hospice Care patients and families and enjoying every second of making a difference! So far she has been enjoying her retirement and plans to continue spending time and creating memories with her family and traveling whenever the opportunity arise and it is affordable!

Dwight Cartier is an entrepreneur, consultant and mental health advocate who has a passion for
community outreach and a strong business acumen. Dwight is the youngest child of two siblings
born to Stanislaus Cartier and Petrina Mike-Cartier. He attended the Seventh-day Adventist School
from second to twelfth grade – graduating in the class of 1986. He went on to attend Capella
University where he earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Management.
Dwight carved his path to entrepreneurship after years of working in the travel industry as a
consultant to major companies such as American Airlines, American Express and The Home
Depot. When travel came to a halt after the September 11 attacks, Dwight reinvented himself and
his go-forward strategy and discovered his niche as a businessman. He is now the chief executive
officer and leading consultant for Georgia-based Dwight Cartier and Associates, Inc. – a firm
specializing in travel, expense, information technology and information systems solutions and
management. His clients include:
● Department of Health and Human Services
● Department of Homeland Security
● PwC
Dwight’s love for community outreach and mental health awareness stems from his time at the
Seventh-Day Adventist School. He says, “being in a caring environment made me want to get more
involved in mental health awareness and give back.” When Dwight was in 7thgrade, he and a few of
his classmates participated in a school program where they were introduced to the needs in their
community such as food insecurity and homelessness. After learning about what was happening in
their own community, Dwight and his classmates raised money by fundraising for donations from
businesses and organizations to help fill the local need. Upholding his tradition of giving back,
Dwight is currently an avid volunteer with Community Action NOW.
Affectionately known as “Dwight Mike,” he is also a proud dad and grandfather. In his spare
time, Dwight enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball, traveling, and getting in a
good workout with the Peloton community.
Those who know Dwight would describe him as smart, motivated, driven and family oriented. One
of the things he is most proud of is the solid foundation he received from S.D.A.
Dwight’s words of wisdom to recent graduates of his alma mater are, “It is not only about who you
know, but also about WHAT you know.” Dwight encourages those who may venture into business,
or the workforce in general, to have a strategy and embed themselves in its culture.
In terms of what is next for Dwight, he is looking forward to stepping into the political scene and
running for candidacy soon. He’s excited to get more involved in the community and become more
available and accessible to members of the community and his hometown – through his business.
